Nutritional studies were performed with Tetrahymena pyriformis strain W grown monoxenically on fifteen bacterial species from different sources (faecal, soil and phytopathogenic strains are included). Every bacterial species tested was utilized as substrate by T. pyriformis W although with some differences in efficiency. Some of the enteric bacteria as well as Agrobacterium tumefaciens and its L form showed to be the best substrates, whereas Azotobacter vinelandii and Rhizobium leguminosarum gave the lowest ciliate yields. The quality of each substrate is expressed by the respective growth rates of T. pyriformis during the logarithmic phase. The total number of ciliates produced was linearly related to bacterial concentration, within a definite range of substrate concentrations, as shown by the correlation coefficients obtained.
