Notes
The freshwater rotifer Asplanchna sieboldi responds to dietary tocopherol by producing cruciform offspring whose body-wall-outgrowths vary in size and shape as a function of tocopherol concentration. Experiments were performed to test the effects of temperature, food (Paramecium) density, pH, and osmolarity on the sensitivity of the rotifers to tocopherol. In no case were biologically important effects observed, although slight but statistically changes in the response occurred in some cases. The relative insensitivity to non-tocopherol components of the environment is discussed in relation to the control of polymorphism and sexual reproduction.
