Purpose for use
Methyl carbamate insecticide.
Carbaryl is used around the world on a variety of agricultural crops, ornamentals, turf, forest, livestock, and poultry as well as on certain other nonagricultural pests. Carbaryl has been used since 1959 and the strongest influence on its use patterns has been a marked reduction of the general use of low-cost organochlorine insecticides for which it has often been selected as a replacement in the years 1980s. The inhibitory effects of carbaryl on cholinesterase activities which are essential for the transmission of nervous impulses are well established. Moreover, some carbamates have a toxic effect on cytochrome P-450's dependent system and are capable of mutagenesis and immunotoxicity. (ref. ID; 6822)
