Toxicity
Methylmercury (MeHg) is a well-documented neurotoxin that poses a danger to the environment and to public health. The human central nervous system is vulnerable to MeHg toxicity, because MeHg, when bound to L-cysteine, can readily traverse the blood-brain barrier. Exposure to high levels of MeHg causes irreversible neurobehavioral and neuropsychological disorders and is particularly detrimental to the brain development of infants and children. (ref. ID; 7172)
