    GIO Researcher, Tomoyuki Aizawa attended COP9 as a member of Japan's delegations and assisted in discussions on Methodological Issues.
  • NovemberFirst Workshop on Greenhouse Gases Inventories in Asia Region (WGIA) (13-14 November, Phuket, Thailand)
    The Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the National Institute for Environmental Studies jointly convened the WGIA. Participants from eleven countries and two international organizations actively discussed and exchanged information on the current status on the development and future development of greenhouse gases inventories in Asia Region.

    GIO Manager, Dr. Nakane attended the WCCC 2003 and gave a presentation on Japan's greenhouse gases inventories.
  • OctoberIn-Country Review of Greenhouse Gases Inventories of Canada submitted in 2003 (27 September - 5 October, Ottawa, Canada)
    GIO Researcher, Tomoyuki Aizawa attended the in-country review coordinated by the UNFCCC secretariat and conducted a review of greenhouse gases inventories of Canada submitted in 2003.
  • OctoberAPN approved GIO's proposed project under the CAPaBLE Programme
    Under the Scientific Capacity Building/Enhancement for Sustainable Development in Developing Countries (CAPaBLE) of the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research, the GIO's proposed project, entitled as “Capacity Building for Greenhouse Gas Inventory Development in Asia-Pacific Developing Countries", was successfully accepted. The project explores the methodology to effectively improve the quality of greenhouse gas inventories though pilot studies in Cambodia and Thailand and shares the gained experience with other countries to contribute to their improved inventories. The project is executed by GIO and researchers from Cambodia and Thailand in duration of October 2003 to March 2006.
  • OctoberIn-Country Review of Greenhouse Gases Inventories of Japan submitted in 2003 (20-24 October, Ministry of the Environment, Japan)
    In-country review of greenhouse gases inventories of Japan submitted in 2003 which was coordinated by the UNFCCC secretariat took place at the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MoEJ). GIO Manager, Dr. Nakane and Researcher, Tomoyuki Aizawa attended the review and provided details of Japan's greenhouse gases inventories submitted in 2003 to the members of expert review teams, related governmental officials from MoEJ, other governmental ministries and agencies, and related researchers from other institutes.

    An initial National Greenhouse Gases Inventory Report of Japan prepared by GIO was submitted to the UNFCCC secretariat.

    GIO Collaborating Researcher, Takashi Morimoto attended the centralized review of greenhouse gases inventories coordinated by the UNFCCC and conducted a review of greenhouse gases inventories of five countries including Denmark.

    GIO Manager, Dr. Nakane attended the IPCC Expert Group Scoping Meeting.
  • AugustSubmission of Greenhouse Gases Inventories, Common Reporting Format (CRF) to UNFCCC secretariat (25 August)
    The CRF for Japan's greenhouse gases inventories prepared by GIO was submitted to the UNFCCC secretariat.

    SB18 was held on June 4-13, 2003 in Bonn, Germany. Researcher Tomoyuki Aizawa attended the SB18 as a member of Japan's delegations and assisted in discussions concerning “Technical Issues".
  • AprilParticipated in Implementing Kyoto in Russia and CIS: Moving from Theory to Practice
    GIO's manager, Dr. Nakane attended a workshop entitled "Implementing Kyoto in Russia and CIS: Moving from Theory to Practice" on April 9-10, 2003 in Moscow, Russia. Dr. Nakane participated in discussions concerning mutually beneficial implementation of international project investments and emissions trading in the context of the Kyoto Protocol.
  • AprilParticipated in the Second Workshop on Methodologies for Adjustments under Article 5, Paragraph 2 of the Kyoto Protocol
    This workshop was held on April 7-9, 2003 in Lisbon, Portugal. Researcher Tomoyuki Aizawa attended the workshop and participated in assessment for simulating the calculation of adjustments under Article 5, paragraph 2 of the Kyoto Protocol.
  • JanuaryParticipated in the 1st Editorial Board Meeting of IPCC Database on Greenhouse Gas Emission Factors
    Dr. Nakane was selected as an expert in industrial processes of the Editorial Board by the Task Force Bureau of the IPCC National Greenhouse Gas Inventories Programme (IPCC, NGGIP). This board meeting was held on January 28-30, 2003 in Hayama, Japan, and Dr. Nakane took part in assessment for developing emission factors database (EFDB).
