Brief Description of Research
Planning and public management for disaster waste management
Disaster waste management is one of the major issues for prompt and sustainable recovery from disasters. In order to effectively handle both general and disaster wastes under disaster situation, where time and resource constraints are serious, planning and public management of tasks, organization, personnel, equipment, budget etc. are crucial. Under this study, methodology on public management for disaster waste management, including planning, implementation, and capacity development are being developed, together with tools to support such management.

Environmental management during disasters
It is widely recognized that disasters often accompany environmental risks, including e.g. spread of hazardous materials (asbestos, oil, acid, etc.) and deterioration of living environment (odor, dust, noise, etc.). However, the method and principles of environmental management during disasters are not established to date. Studies related to environmental/sustainability assessment and public participation during disasters are in progress.

Waste management in aging society
Currently, one out of four Japanese is aged over 65, and this rate is estimated to increase up to one out of three by 2035. In terms of waste management, there are some issues related to aging, including disposal of home-medical care waste, treatment of disposable diapers, waste disposal by aged households, etc. Studies on waste disposal supporting mechanism for aged households are in progress, with a special focus on secondary effect in terms of welfare and community development.
