The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) will jointly host a side event with the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) with the title “Low Carbon Actions in Asia: Modeling to Bridge Science and Policy” at the 18th Conference of the Parties (COP18) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 8th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the parties (CMP8) to the Kyoto Protocol (November 26-December 7, 2012, Doha City, Qatar). Asia will play a central role in making a reality of concrete measures to cut global GHG emissions in half by 2050. At this side event of COP18/CMP8, alongside discussions between internationally active researchers and policy-implementing bodies, the scenarios “Ten Actions towards Low Carbon Asia” and “Iskandar Malaysia Low Carbon Society Blueprint” will be presented for the first time. In addition, at the exhibition booth at the COP18/CMP8 venue, the status and outcomes of a broad range of environmental research initiatives at NIES – with a focus on global warming - including scenarios towards the realization of low carbon Asia; results of future climate simulations using the global climate model MIROC5; and the latest GHG monitoring data from the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT), will be introduced.

1. Overview of Side Event “Low Carbon Actions in Asia: Modeling to Bridge Science and Policy”

Date: November 30 (Friday), 2012
Time: 11:30-13:00
Venue: Room 6, Conference Venue, Qatar National Convention Centre
Hosts: National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES, Japan)
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM, Malaysia)
Details: We will report on the latest research outputs relating to the ten actions towards Low Carbon Asia and the Iskandar Malaysia Low Carbon Society Blueprint based on scenarios and roadmaps formulated towards the realization of Asian LCS as developed using the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM). Furthermore, we will deepen discussions surrounding the role of the model as a means of bridging the gap between the sciences and policy-making towards the realization of Asian LCS by engaging with the administrative bodies responsible for implementation in society.
